Abstract : | This study analyses the academic performance of students from the Economic Department of Athens University of Economics and Business with the aim to understand better the academic level of the Department. I first provide various descriptive statistics related to the students of the Department. Next I analyze student’s performance and the duration of their studies in a regression framework while controlling for gender, age of entry to university and family residence. In addition, I examine the academic performance of students who have entered university via general examinations versus other modes of entry. I find that first, students not entering through general examinations perform significantly worse in terms of their average grade and that they take more years to complete their studies. These findings raise more questions about the reason that lead students in the prolongation of their studies and the poorly academic performance of non - traditional qualification students, suggesting that they may be the causes of some underlying factors which are related to the educational system.
