| Abstract : | Η παρούσα εργασία μελετά τη σημασία των θεσμών για τις μακροοικονομικές επιδόσεις των χωρών. Απώτερος σκοπός της εργασίας είναι να διερευνηθεί κατά πόσο η σημασία των θεσμών, όπως αντανακλώνται στους Παγκόσμιους Δείκτες Διακυβέρνησης, επηρεάζουν την οικονομική κατάσταση των χωρών και πώς αυτό αποτυπώνεται στα οικονομικά τους δεδομένα και ειδικότερα στα μακροοικονομικά τους μεγέθη.Αρχικά, γίνεται εννοιολογική προσέγγιση του όρου «θεσμός», κατηγοριοποίηση των θεσμών βάσει διαφόρων κριτήριων, αλλά και αναφορά στη σημασία της θεσμικής αλλαγής και στη θεωρία των θεσμών.Έπειτα, πραγματοποιείται ιστορική αναφορά στα Θεσμικά Οικονομικά και αναλύονται οι βασικές αρχές αυτής της σχολής οικονομικής σκέψης, με αναφορά στην εξέλιξη των θεσμών.Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζονται στατιστικά στοιχεία από την Παγκόσμια Τράπεζα, με στόχο να αποδειχθεί ότι οι χώρες με ισχυρά θεσμικά αντίβαρα (checks and balances) εμφανίζουν καλή μακροοικονομική απόδοση.Τέλος, γίνεται αναφορά στους λόγους για τους οποίους η ποιότητα των θεσμών μιας χώρας, συμβάλλει εν τέλει θετικά στην εξασφάλιση σταθερότητας του μακροοικονομικού και χρηματοοικονομικού περιβάλλοντός της.
This dissertation examines the importance of institutions on the macroeconomic performance. Its final goal is to investigate whether the importance of institutions, as they are reflected in the Global Governance Indices, affect the economic situation of the countries and how this affects their economic data; especially their macroeconomic results. It starts with a conceptual approach to the term "institution", categorization of institutions based on various criteria, the importance of institutional change and the theory of institutions.Then it presents the historical context of Institutional Economics and an analysis of the basic principles of this School of Economic Thought, focusing on the evolution of institutions.Further to the above, there is statistical presentation of the World Bank data in order to prove that countries with deep institutions (“checks and balances”) are well performing on macroeconomics.At the end, this work refers to the reasons why the quality of a country's institutions contributes positively to the stability of its macroeconomic and financial environment.
