Abstract :	Nowadays, technology is evolving rapidly and is applied more and more in several business. The same trend seems to be followed in shipping although being a traditional industry that is not open in new technologies and changes. The chartering in shipping is one of its most core part; it refers to the transportation of a cargo from the loading port to the discharge port and in general is the procedure via which the vessel is employed. Until now, this procedure is being conducted by ship brokers. Ship brokers’ responsibility is to keep constantly the vessel employed while informing their principals for the current trends in the market or their competitors’ movements in order to develop theirs. However, the introduction of new technologies such as blockchain technology and its derivatives are trying to change the landscape of the whole procedure. They promise to increase the speed of the transactions, reduce the middlemen and automate the whole procedure of the vessel’s employment. Blockchain technology is already used in different supply chains; food distribution, in land transportation, medical sector and real estate are only some of them. However, in shipping, blockchain technology is not vastly applied. In our thesis, we analyzed the existing literature and then we conducted an exploratory research addressed to relevant employees in shipping to find out if the industry is ready to embrace new technologies that can maybe facilitate its operations. Στις μέρες μας, η τεχνολογία αναπτύσσεται με πολύ γρήγορους ρυθμούς και συνεχώς εφαρμόζεται σε όλο και περισσότερους τομείς της οικονομίας. Η ίδια τάση φαίνεται να ισχύει και στην ναυτιλία αν και είναι ένας παραδοσιακός κλάδος που δεν είναι ανοιχτός σε νέες τεχνολογίες και αλλαγές. Η ναύλωση ενός πλοίου αποτελεί ένας απο τους πιο σημαντικούς τομείς και αναφέρεται στην μεταφορά του φορτίου από το λιμάνι φόρτωσης στο λιμάνι της εκφόρτωσης. Μέχρι σήμερα, η ναύλωση ενός πλοίου γινόταν μέσω των ναυλομεσιτών. Ο ρόλος του ναυλομεσίτη είναι να ναυλώνει το πλοίο καθώς και να ενημερώνει τους πελάτες του σχετικά με την κατάσταση της αγοράς όπως επίσης και για τις κινήσεις των ανταγωνιστών τους.Η εμφάνισης νέων τεχνολογιών όπως το blockchain και τα παράγωγά του προσπαθούν να τροποποιήσουν την διαδικασία της ναύλωσης των πλοίων. Υπόσχονται αύξσηση στην ταχύτητα των συναλλαγών, μείωση των μεσάζοντων και αυτοματισμό της όλης διαδικασίας. Η τεχνολογία blockchain, ήδη χρησιμοποιείται σε άλλους τομείς της οικονομίας όπως για παράδειγμα η διανομή τροφών, εφοδιαστικές αλυσίδες. ο τομέας της ιατρικής και οι μεταβιβάσεις ακινήτων. Αντιθέτως, η τεχνολογια blockchain δεν εχει εφαρμοστεί στην ναυτιλία σε μεγάλο βαθμό. Στην διπλωματική εργασία μας, αναλύσαμε την υπάρχουσα βιβλιογραφία ενώ πραγματοποιήσαμε μία έρευνα στην οποία συμμετείχαν ερωτηθέντες που εργάζονται σε παρόμοιες θέσεις για να συμπεράνουμε εαν η ναυτιλία ειναι έτοιμη να ενστερνιστεί καινούριες τεχνολογίες οι οποίες μπορούνε να κάνουν την λειτουργία της ευκολότερη.
