Τεκμήριο The relativism effect on neutrality and impartiality during the mediation procedure(2021-11-09) Karypidis, Stavros; Καρυπίδης, Σταύρος; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Roumanias, Konstantinos; Pagoulatos, Georgios; Blavoukos, SpyrosEvery single moment, each individual on this planet negotiates. This constant process has many prerequisites depending on the specific scenario. On many occasions negotiation may collapse due to the divergent opinions that the disputers possess. This is the reason for a mediator’s assistance. The considered credentials for this intermediary are primarily ”neutrality” and ”impartiality”. But it is widely observed that every person may have his/her own point of view, which as a fact will affect those aforementioned notions in definition and on application as well. Different experiences in different environments may lead to those various beliefs, which is one of the aspects of the idea of relativism. This dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive description of the effect of relativism on the notions of neutrality and impartiality for the mediator, and the importance that it has on the mediation procedure itself, conditions that have not been clearly understood yet. It retrospectively presents relativism through the ages and analyzes its relationship to the notions of neutrality and impartiality after presenting their ample, from contradicting to converging, definitions. These concepts are undoubtedly entangled in the scientific community as a result of the relativism effect, which was expected from the beginning. The most prominent outcome of this effect though is the fact that the chase of the neutral and impartial mediator is futile. The pursuance instead should be limited for the most capable one, depending on the situation.
