Granger causaliy: application on greek online pharmacy

Abstract

Ο σκοπός της διπλωματικής εργασίας ήταν η ανάλυση δεδομένων για την ανίχνευση, σχέσης αιτιότητας κατά Granger, μεταξύ των κορυφαίων σε πωλήσεις προϊοντικών κατηγοριών στον κλάδο του Ελληνικού Online Φαρμακείου. Η ανάλυση έγινε σε δεδομένα πωλήσεων επιχείρησης που δραστηριοποιείται στον κλάδο του online φαρμακείου (eshop) στην Ελλάδα, αποκλειστικά σε επίπεδο προϊοντικής κατηγορίας, και αφορά ολόκληρο το έτος 2022. Για την ανάλυση αυτή και για την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων, χρησιμοποιήθηκε η γλώσσα προγραμματισμού Pyhton. Οι κατηγορίες μελετήθηκαν κατά ζεύγη, και η ανάλυση κατέδειξε την ύπαρξη σχέσεων αιτιότητας κατά Granger μεταξύ ορισμένων ζευγών ενώ μεταξύ άλλων ζευγών, ουδεμία τέτοια σχέση εντοπίστηκε. Συγκεκριμένα, για το σκοπό της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας, έγινε μια πρωταρχική ανάλυση δεδομένων, ακολούθησαν έλεγχοι υποθέσεων σχετικά με έννοιες όπως η σταθερότητα και η γραμμικότητα των δεδομένων, διεξάχθηκε ο κύριος έλεγχος-στόχος υπόθεσης ύπαρξης αιτιότητας κατά Granger, καθώς και μελετήθηκε η κατεύθυνση των σχέσεων αιτιότητας (μονόδρομη ή αμφίδρομη), στις προϊοντικές κατηγορίες όπου βρέθηκε να υπάρχουν τέτοιες σχέσεις. Τέλος, τα ευρήματα μελετήθηκαν υπό το φάσμα της εφαρμογής σε επιχειρηματικό επίπεδο. Η ανάλυση που εκπονήθηκε, μπορεί να αποτελέσει το έναυσμα για περαιτέρω έρευνες στον κλάδο του Ελληνικού Online φαρμακείου, η φύση και ο ρόλος του οποίου άλλαξε δραστικά μετά την πανδημία του Covid19. Η γενικότητα της μεθοδολογίας έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι έχουν καταγραφεί όλα τα βήματα, από την αρχική ανάλυση των δεδομένων μέχρι και τον τελικό στατιστικό έλεγχο για την ύπαρξη σχέσεων αιτιότητας, τις παραμέτρους και τις λοιπές υποθέσεις που μελετήθηκαν για την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων, τους περιορισμούς στην εκπόνηση της ανάλυσης κ.ο.κ.

The purpose of this thesis was the data analysis with the aim to detect Granger causality relationships between the leading in terms of sales value product categories in the Greek Online Pharmacy industry. The analysis was made on sales data of retailer (e-shop) of the Greek online pharmacy sector, exclusively at a product category level, and concerns the entire year 2022. For this analysis to be conducted and for conclusions to be driven, the Python programming language was used. The categories were studied in pairs, and the analysis indicated the existence of Granger causality relationships between specific pairs while among other pairs, no such relationship was detected. Specifically, for the purpose of this thesis, a primary data analysis was performed, followed by hypothesis tests regarding concepts such as stationarity and linearity of data, the main test of the Granger causality hypothesis was conducted, as well as the direction of the causal relationships was studied (unidirectional or bidirectional), in the product categories where such relationships were identified. Finally, the findings were studied under the spectrum of application at a business level. The analysis can be used as a trigger for further research in the Greek online pharmacy industry, the nature and role of which changed drastically after the Covid-19 pandemic. The generality of the methodology lies in the fact that all the steps have been recorded, from the initial analysis of data to the final statistical test for the existence of Granger causal relationships, the parameters and other hypotheses studied to draw conclusions, the limitations in the elaboration of the analysis etc.
