Cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies

Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a solid foundation understanding the cryptocurrenciesand blockchain and to provide an analysis on ECBs endeavors in introducing the digital Euro.In the first chapter a brief introduction is given on the blockchain and cryptocurrency technologyalong with the reasons behind the great adoption from individuals and businesses and also thetechnology underneath them.On the second chapter, there is a breakdown on cryptocurrency evolution and how investors,technologists, institutions like banks and fintech companies as well as entire nations stepped intothe cryptoccurency world to reap the benefits of this revolutionary technology.Furthermore, on the third chapter, there will be given a blueprint on central bank digitalcurrencies(CBDCs), what they stand for, their use cases and how the differ amongst traditionalfinancial methods and cryptocurrencies.Finally, a research o digital Euro will be presented on the fourth chapter, providing the keytakeaways on its purpose, functionality, and the benefits it could potential bring in Europe.
