Crypto investments and sentiment

Abstract

Πρόσφατα, τα κρυπτονομίσματα έχουν κερδίσει μεγάλη προσοχή, κυρίως λόγω της δυναμικής τους στην αγορά και των προσδοκιών για υψηλά κέρδη. Επιπλέον, οι ερευνητές συνειδητοποιούν περισσότερο την ικανότητα των μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης να προβλέπουν έναν αριθμό γεγονότων, ιδιαίτερα εκείνων που σχετίζονται με τις χρηματοοικονομικές αγορές. Σε αυτή τη διπλωματική, εξετάζουμε τον προγνωστικό ρόλο του συναισθήματος των επενδυτών που προκύπτει από το αποτέλεσμα της ανάλυσης του Twitter σχετικά με τις τιμές οκτώ κρυπτονομισμάτων: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Binance Coin (BNB), Polkadot ( DOT), XRP (XRP), Uniswap (UNI) και Litecoin (LTC). Για το σκοπό αυτό, συλλέχθηκαν πληροφορίες τιμών και tweets για τα οκτώ κρυπτονομίσματα και μετά από την επεξεργασία τους, χρησιμοποιήθηκε το Valence Aware Dictionary for SEntiment Reasoning (VADER) για την ανάλυση του συναισθήματος στα tweets. Η σταθερότητα των χρονοσειρών ελέγχθηκε με τη δοκιμή Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF), ενώ η ύπαρξη συνολοκλήρωσης ελέγχθηκε με τη μέθοδο Engle Granger. Μετά την εκτέλεση του τεστ αιτιότητας Granger και τη χρήση μοντέλων Vector Autoregressive (VAR) και Vector Error Correction (VEC) διαπιστώθηκε ότι το συναίσθημα των επενδυτών στο Twitter έχει προγνωστική δύναμη για τις τιμές των Cardano, Polkadot και XRP.

Recently, cryptocurrencies have gained a lot of attention, mostly because of their market dynamics and claims of high profits. Additionally, researchers are becoming more aware of social media ability to predict a number of events, particularly those related to the financial markets. In this thesis, we examine the predictive role of investors’ sentiment which is the outcome of Twitter analysis about the prices of eight cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Cardano (ADA), Binance Coin (BNB), Polkadot (DOT), XRP (XRP), Uniswap (UNI) and Litecoin (LTC). For this purpose, price information and tweets, for the eight cryptocurrencies were collected, and after preprocessing, Valence Aware Dictionary for SEntiment Reasoning (VADER) was used to perform sentiment analysis on tweets. The time series stationarity was checked with Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test, while the existence of cointegration was checked by using the Engle Granger method. After performing the Granger causality test, and using Vector Autoregressive (VAR) and Vector Error Correction (VEC) models it was found that Twitter sentiment has predictive power for the prices of Cardano, Polkadot and XRP.
