Best practices for the transport of electric vehicles on board vessels

Abstract

Στον τομέα των μεταφορών, ο αριθμός των ηλεκτρικών οχημάτων αυξάνεται. Με την εισαγωγή των πρόσφατων τεχνολογιών στην αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία, έχει αυξηθεί ο αριθμός των ηλεκτρικών οχημάτων που κατασκευάζονται. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση Κατασκευαστών Αυτοκινήτων (ACEA) έχει συγκεντρώσει δεδομένα ταξινόμησης επιβατικών αυτοκινήτων στην ΕΕ ανά τύπο καυσίμου, τα οποία δείχνουν σημαντική αύξηση των οχημάτων εναλλακτικών καυσίμων (AFV) που ταξινομήθηκαν τα τελευταία χρόνια. Τα ηλεκτρικά οχήματα (EV) προβλέπεται να είναι ισα σε ποσότητα με τις πωλήσεις οχημάτων με κινητήρα εσωτερικής καύσης (ICE) έως το 2030 και να τις ξεπεράσουν έως το 2040. Μέσα στα τελευταία 10 χρόνια, οι πωλήσεις EV αυξήθηκαν από 100.000 εκτιμώμενες σε 6.750.000 με αύξηση 108 τοις εκατό από Μόνο από το 2020 έως το 2021. Αρκετές παρανοήσεις σχετικά με τις πυρκαγιές ηλεκτρικών οχημάτων με μπαταρία κυκλοφορούν δημόσια και οδηγούν σε αβεβαιότητα.

Considering the urgent need to decarbonize all modes of transport, the number of new energy vehicles has been on the rise. With the introduction of recent technologies in the automotive industry, there has been an increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) being manufactured. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has collected passenger car registration data in the EU per fuel type which show a significant growth of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) registered over the past years. Electric vehicles (EVs) are projected to match the sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2030, and to surpass them by 2040. Within the past 10 years, EV sales went from an estimated 100,000 to 6,750,000 with a 108 percent increase from 2020 to 2021 alone. It is projected to increase within the next 10 years1. Several misconceptions regarding battery electric vehicle fires circulate publicly and lead to uncertainty. Fires in battery electric vehicles are not more dangerous than fires in conventional vehicles and are currently not more frequent. As a result, EVs have become an area of focus for the maritime industry as there have been increased fire incidents on vessels transporting these vehicles. It has been identified that there is a need for a collective best practice set. The best practices summarized within this report apply to roll-on roll-off (ro/ro) vessels including passenger-carrying vessels and are intended to complement but not replace ship operators’ existing measures for the carriage of EVs and are applicable per the configuration of each vessel.
