The role of crowdfunding in startup financing: how do crowdfunding platforms affect the availability and cost of capital for startups, and what are the implications for traditional forms of financing such as venture capital and angel investing

Abstract

Το crowdfunding είναι ένας αναδυόμενος τομέας έρευνας στον ευρύτερο τομέα της επιχειρηματικότητας. Από το 2008, λόγω της παγκόσμιας χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης και της πιστωτικής κρίσης, πολλοί επιχειρηματίες και ερευνητές άρχισαν να εξερευνούν νέα εναλλακτικά χρηματοοικονομικά εργαλεία. Παρά τις συνεχείς επιστημονικές συζητήσεις, η έρευνα πάνω στο αντικείμενο του crowdfunding εξακολουθεί να είναι ένα νέο φαινόμενο. Για να δώσουμε σαφήνεια σε αυτό το νέο πεδίο, πραγματοποιήσαμε μια ανασκόπηση της βιβλιογραφίας. Αυτή η μελέτη διερευνά τον ρόλο του crowdfunding στη χρηματοδότηση νεοφυών επιχειρήσεων (start-up) και διερευνά πώς οι πλατφόρμες crowdfunding επηρεάζουν τη διαθεσιμότητα και το κόστος του κεφαλαίου για τις νεοφυείς επιχειρήσεις. Επιπλέον, εξετάζει τις επιπτώσεις του crowdfunding για τις παραδοσιακές μορφές χρηματοδότησης, συγκεκριμένα το επιχειρηματικό κεφάλαιο και τους επιχειρηματίες αγγέλους. Οι στόχοι της έρευνας είναι η αξιολόγηση της επιρροής που έχουν οι πλατφόρμες crowdfunding στη διαθεσιμότητα κεφαλαίων, η ανάλυση των επιπτώσεων στο κόστος του κεφαλαίου και η εξέταση των επιπτώσεων για τους παραπάνω επενδυτές. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτής της μελέτης αποκαλύπτουν ότι οι πλατφόρμες crowdfunding έχουν μεταμορφώσει σημαντικά το τοπίο της χρηματοδότησης start-up, εκδημοκρατίζοντας την πρόσβαση σε κεφάλαια και παρέχοντας ποικίλες επιλογές χρηματοδότησης, ενώ συμπληρώνουν τις παραδοσιακές χρηματοοικονομικές μεθόδους. Οι νεοφυείς επιχειρήσεις επωφελούνται από την αυξημένη διαθεσιμότητα κεφαλαίων, παρόλα αυτά υπάρχουν ανισότητες με βάση το φύλο και πιθανές επιπτώσεις που έχουν να κάνουν με την δραστηριότητα της κοινότητας στις πλατφόρμες αυτές. Το crowdfunding μειώνει σημαντικά το κόστος συγκέντρωσης κεφαλαίων μέσω της προσβασιμότητας που βασίζεται στο Διαδίκτυο και της διακριτής δυναμικής του κόστους σε μοντέλα που βασίζονται σε ανταμοιβές, δωρεές, μετοχές και χρέη. Ωστόσο, η επιτυχία των καμπανιών crowdfunding εξαρτάται από τη διαχείριση των τελών πλατφόρμας και των εξόδων μάρκετινγκ και την αντιμετώπιση κινδύνων όπως η απάτη και οι ηθικές ανησυχίες που εμφανίζονται.

Crowdfunding is an emerging area of research within the broader field of entrepreneurship. Since 2008, due to the global financial crisis and the credit crunch, entrepreneurs and researchers have started to explore new alternative financial tools. Despite ongoing scientific discussions, crowdfunding research is still a new phenomenon. To bring clarity to this new field, we conducted a literature review.This study investigates the role of crowdfunding in start-up financing and explores how crowdfunding platforms impact the availability and cost of capital for startups. Additionally, it examines the implications of crowdfunding for traditional forms of financing, specifically venture capital (VC) and angel investing (AI). The research objectives are to assess the influence of crowdfunding platforms on capital availability, analyze the effects on the cost of capital, and examine the implications for VC and AC. The results of this study reveal that crowdfunding platforms have significantly transformed the landscape of start-up financing, democratizing access to capital and providing diverse funding options while complementing traditional financial methods. Startups benefit from increased capital availability, although with persistent gender-based disparities and potential community effects. Crowdfunding substantially reduces fundraising costs through its internet-driven accessibility and distinct cost dynamics across reward-based, donation-based, equity-based, and debt-based models. Nevertheless, the success of crowdfunding campaigns hinges on managing platform fees, and marketing expenses, and addressing risks like fraud and ethical concerns. Furthermore, crowdfunding's relationship with traditional financing methods, including venture capital and angel investing, is characterized by nuanced complementarity or substitutability, depending on startup characteristics and the presence of corporate or independent investors. In summary, crowdfunding plays apivotal role in reshaping the startup ecosystem by providing capital, reducing costs, and interacting with traditional financing in multi-layered ways.
