Profitability of ports: determinants and financial data

This paper presents a research and assessment regarding the profitability of port authorities and listed companies that operate ports among the top 100 ports, based on the Lloyds list regarding world port rankings. This thesis has a time frame of 10 years (2010 until 2019). The rankings that are mentioned on the paper are related entirely with the containerized trade, since the ranking that this thesis is based on, has to do with the annual twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) throughput of ports. There was a presentation of the basic descriptive statistics that were used and a reporting of any trend (if there was any) occurred during the examined period. As a result of the conducted research, it is presented that Return on Assets, and consequently profitability, is significantly depicted from the disaggregate model rather than the aggregate model. Additionally, there was no linear correlation between R.O.A. and the variables used. Only one from the models that were used provided a favourable clarification regarding the fluctuations of R.O.A. and is the only model that can be utilized.
