For each country, to be eligible to meet the said requirements, a unique action plan should be designed, and an implementation relied on its different key geopolitical and legislative characteristics should take place. The EU has set the high-level framework that will be the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Regarding Greece, the major strategy towards climate-neutrality and much more towards Fit-for-55 agenda (EU must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030) relies heavily on decarbonization. This derives from the fact that even in 2021, Greece’s electricity production mix depends hugely on natural gas units as well as hard coal / lignite thermal plants. It is necessary to underline that national grid upgrades as well as energy storage units’ installation are of the utmost importance, so that the whole transition could be realized. The latter constitutes the key subject of research and statistical analysis of this dissertation.In this framework, the present study aims to narrow down the issue of the size of energy storage capacity needed for the year 2030. The study is summarized in a model where all production units (Gas, Photovoltaics, Hydro and Wind) but lignite plus imports plus energy storage inflow/outflow equal load consumption. At first, a historical analysis has been done for all variables. After that, every variable has been statistically fitted in a known-distribution, with its parameters calculated via MLE and the GOF tested through Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. So, for each variable an estimation for a typical day per month illustrated and by adjusting results with the current NECP goals for 2030, outcomes that Greece will need of 4.5 GWh of energy storage units
