Τεκμήριο Assessing efficiency in urban transit systems : with an application to electric bus services in Athens, Greece using data envelopment analysis(Athens University of Economics and Business, 12-2001) Politou, Despina M.; Kalyvitis, SarantisThesis - Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International European Economic StudiesΤεκμήριο The effect of ECB monetary policy after the financial crisis of 2008(01/31/2019) Kontogoni, Elena; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Katsimi, Margarita; Kalyvitis, SarantisΙn the current thesis, we examine the efficiency of European Central Bank's monetary policy during the 2008 financial crisis. We analyze the channels used for monetary policy transmission and we conduct a panel data analysis to determine the impact of several variables on bank performance, risk-taking and bank lending system, to assess the monetary policy efficiency. We use data for the period 2007-2015 for 10 Eurozone countries. Moreover, we conduct panel data analysis for three different groups: Northern Eurozone countries, Southern Eurozone countries and the Eurozone as a whole. We find that, when bank credit relevant to bank deposits and the ratio of foreign banks amongst total banks increase then the risk of default for the whole banking system increases. As bank credit relevant to bank deposits increase, it affects the bank performance negatively. An increase of the assets of the three largest commercial banks has a positive impact on nonperforming loans, whereas when GDP, the number of foreign banks in relation to domestic one's and Euribor increase it is the opposite.Τεκμήριο The effect of emotional intelligence on conflict management under conditions of psychological stress in the workplace(02-04-2024) Basdekis, Dimitrios; Μπασδέκης, Δημήτριος; Kokkinaki, Flora; Blavoukos, Spyridon; Kalyvitis, SarantisΣε ένα συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενο και ανταγωνιστικό περιβάλλον υπάρχει αυξανόμενη ζήτηση για τη δημιουργία ιδιαίτερα αποδοτικών ομάδων, ικανών να επιτύχουν στόχους μέσω της παραγωγικής συνεργασίας. Μέσω της μελέτης αυτών των θεμάτων και της σωστής εφαρμογής των ευρημάτων, προωθείται ένα πιο υγιές και παραγωγικό περιβάλλον στο χώρο εργασίας με θετική επίδραση στην ευημερία και την αποδοτικότητα των εργαζομένων.Τεκμήριο An empirical investigation of the relationship between FDI flows and exportsKaragiotis, Apostolos; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International European Economic Studies; Kalyvitis, SarantisThe purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between FDI flows to Greece and Greek exports. First, some stylized facts are presented, regarding FDI flows and the profile of Greek Exports from 1985 to 2015. Second, I use FDI and exports data from various sources and calculate the Pearson's correlation coefficients for a sample of 17 countries (Greece's trade partners) and another one of 7 industries for the years 2003-2015. Overall, most coefficients are negative and insignificant. However, a positive, linear FDI-exports correlation seems to exist for the cases of Luxembourg, Cyprus and most Balkan countries, as well as for the industries of Textiles, Transportations and Office/Telecom equipment.Τεκμήριο Essays in macroeconomics and public financeVella, Eugenia; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Stengos, Thanasis; Economides, George; Kalyvitis, SarantisThe objective of this thesis is to provide new insights into the macroeconomic effects of government spending by analyzing theoretically and empirically different expenditure components. The first part studies the productivity effects of public spending on infrastructure in the U.S. by distinguishing between two main components: capital outlays, which aim at the formation of new infrastructure, and operations and maintenance (O&M) outlays, which are required for the repair and safe operation of the existing infrastructure stock. First, I use a so far unexplored time-series dataset from the U.S. Congressional Budget Office to investigate the productive impact of public infrastructure spending by taking into account its composition (capital and O&M) for each government level (federal government and states and localities). The main research question formulated is twofold, namely whether a marginal dollar should be spent for building new infrastructure or repairing the existing one and by which level of government should these expenditures be undertaken. Using a standard GMM framework for the econometric analysis, I find that a rise (fall) in infrastructure expenditures by states and localities (the federal government) would enhance future productivity growth and that the rise in state and local spending should mainly come from additional O&M outlays in the transport sector. Second, I develop a state-level analysis of the productivity effects of infrastructure's O&M spending by accounting for the presence of interstate transboundary spillovers of both capital and O&M spending. As a theoretical background, I first build a multi-jurisdiction model with productive public expenditure, endogenous capital depreciation, network structure and different levels of government. The model illustrates that the spillover effects of O&M spending, which is financed locally, may be substantially different from those of capital outlays, whose provision is based on a co-financing scheme through local taxation and federal matching grants, with the latter being financed by local taxes. In the empirical analysis, I use a new state-level dataset for capital and O&M spending on water and transportation infrastructure, which I have assembled for the period 1978-2000 based on the Census Bureau's State and Local Government Finances series. I follow a semiparametric methodology that allows for tracing potential nonlinearities in the estimated relationships and deriving output elasticities for each state and time period. The empirical findings confirm, first, that interstate spillovers are significantly positive and exceed within-state impacts for O&M (and capital) spending, implying that there is a substantial wedge between the aggregate and the own-state rates of return. Second, the spillover effect of O&M spending is found to be much higher than the corresponding impact of capital spending. The second part of the thesis examines the role of fiscal policy in the form of government spending on infrastructure and environmental care in a growth model with endogenous subjective discounting. I demonstrate using this general-equilibrium model how shifting the allocation of resources from productive government spending to environmental care, which is labeled as a "green spending reform", can procure a double dividend by raising long-run growth and improving environmental conditions, although the environment does not impact the production technology. An immediate implication is that endogenous growth-maximizing policy requires that a non-zero share of government revenues is allocated to the environment vis-à-vis infrastructure. The main mechanism of the model arises from the assumption of endogenous discounting to environmental quality, which can capture the well documented in the literature "life-expectancy effect" of the latter. By promoting agents' patience and thus inducing higher savings, which support capital accumulation, environmental spending plays an indirect productive role, which in combination with the standard growth-promoting role of infrastructure investment, creates a trade-off between the two types of expenditures. As a result, the relationship between long-run growth and the resource allocation to infrastructure vis-à-vis the environment can become non-monotonic.Τεκμήριο The Euro-Mediterranean partnership and its impact on the Greek trade balance(31-05-2018) Barmpa, Olga; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Katsimi, Margarita; Kalyvitis, SarantisIn this thesis, I examine the evolution of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP) throughout the years and its effects on the Greek trade balance. In the first part of the paper, I present EMP’s evolution and the Association Agreements (AAs) signed between the European Union and the major Partner countries. These countries are Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. In the second part, I make an analysis of each Association Agreement’s implementation course and the problems that occur regarding the efforts to establish a Free Trade Area (FTA) between the two sides. Moreover, I attempt to examine trade relations between EU and Partner countries, mainly by focusing on bilateral trade between Greece and each of these Partner States, with emphasis on the trajectory of Greek exports. Finally, I compare Greece with another EU Mediterranean country, Spain.Τεκμήριο Financial liberalization and business cycles: a study of Latin America countries(06/27/2018) Politis, Konstantinos; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Kalyvitis, SarantisThe purpose of this paper is to study the effect of financial liberalization to the business cycles of the Latin American countries. For this purpose, we are studying the impact of financial liberalization on 5 Latin American countries: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Colombia. After collecting the GDP d of these countries for the period between 1960 to 2015, using the Bry and Boschan formula, we calculated the overall number of business cycles of these countries in our sample for this period. After that, the relationship between the duration and the amplitude of cycles among a variety of different qualitative and economic variables was assessed in order to test whether financial liberalization affected these two factors of the economic cycle. The results show that financial liberalization increases the amplitude of bear phases by 27% and the amplitude of bull phases by 96%, indicating a very strong positive effect on the amplitude of business cycles. Meanwhile, it increases the average duration of bull phases by 11 years and decreases the average duration of bear phases by 1.2 years. In the long run, after the first five years of financial liberalization, amplitudes are affected by the financial freedom to a bigger degree compared to the first years after the liberalization, while the effect on the duration remains the same regardless of the years that have passed after the liberalization. Finally, regarding the financial efficiency of each country, although it is statistically important in some cases, the real effect on the amplitudes and the duration of the business cycles is rather small and negligible. The same goes for the effect that the industrial index of each Latin American country and the G7 countries has on the business cyclesΤεκμήριο The growth impact of foreign aid under alternative political regimesPantelaiou, Ioanna E.; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Kalyvitis, SarantisInspired by a new stream of research that examines the relationship between foreign aid, economic growth and democracy, this study attempts to investigate whether the growth impact of aid is conditional on the political regime of the recipient. We have used cross-country data for 92 developing countries for a twenty nine year time span ranging from 1980 – 2008. The results of this analysis indicated that democracy seems to be positively and significantly related to growth. Nevertheless, we found no evidence that aid works better in more democratic environments. On the contrary, we found little evidence that in some cases, aid is more effective in promoting growth under non-democratic recipients.Τεκμήριο How do culture and traditions affect negotiations between China and the European Union: the belt and road initiative(04-10-2024) Νώε, Νεφέλη-Δήμητρα; Noe, Nefeli-Dimitra; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Informatics; Kokkinaki, Flora; Blavoukos, Spyridon; Kalyvitis, SarantisΣτο παρόν paper εξετάζουμε τη σημασία του πολιτισμού και των παραδόσεων ως προς τον τρόπο όπου και επηρεάζουν τις διαπραγματεύσεις. Θα γίνουν συγκρίσεις σχετικά με το ποιες ήταν οι προκλήσεις, τα οικονομικά οφέλη ή οι απώλειες και πώς αντέδρασε η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, βλέποντας την Ιταλία, μέλος των G7, να ενώνεται με την Κίνα σε αυτόν τον "δρόμο του μεταξιού" προς μια νέα παγκόσμια σκηνή.Τεκμήριο The impact of gender stereotypes on negotiation(05-09-2023) Βλάχου, Ιωάννα; Vlachou, Ioanna; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Kokkinaki, Flora; Blavoukos, Spyros; Kalyvitis, SarantisΑυτή η μελέτη εξετάζει τον αντίκτυπο των έμφυλων στερεοτύπων στη διαπραγματευτική διαδικασία. Ο κρίσιμος παράγοντας που διευκόλυνε την επιτυχία τους είναι ο συμβιβασμός με μια ισορροπία επαγγελματικών (ανδρικών) στερεοτύπων και γυναικείων στερεοτύπων.Τεκμήριο "Is money (just) an illusion?" An empirical approach to economic (ir)rationality(2019) Tsaknaki, Eirini; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Katsimi, Margarita; Kalyvitis, SarantisThe assumption of rationality underlies the prevailing economic theory of our times. This work aims to introduce and examine the phenomenon of money illusion, that is the tendency of economic agents to think in nominal, rather in real, terms. Our purpose is, first, to investigate experimentally whether money illusion exists among young adults. Second, to discuss the relationship between episodes of irrationality and type of academic background. To this end, survey data are collected through the LimeSurvey platform. Findings suggest that indeed, money illusion affects decision-making under uncertainty in various aspects of economic life, however, no dependency from education is proved.Τεκμήριο Issues of monetary policy making in a monetary union(Athens University of Economics and Business, 10-2009) Skotida, Ifigeneia; Brissimis, Sophocles; Kalyvitis, SarantisDoctoral thesis - Athens University of Economics and Business. Department of International and European Economic StudiesΤεκμήριο Negotiation in mergers and acquisitions: insights from the Walt Disney Company-21st Century Fox and other M&A dealsChatzioglou, Charis-Zacharoula; Χατζήογλου, Χάρις-Ζαχαρούλα; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Voliotis, Seraphim; Blavoukos, Spyridon; Kalyvitis, SarantisThis thesis explores the intricate landscape of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) negotiations, utilizing the Disney-Fox merger as a comprehensive case study. It begins by establishing thetheoretical underpinnings of M&A transactions, navigating the landscape of American corporatelaw, and categorizing mergers based on their nature. The study unfolds the dichotomy betweendistributive negotiations, driven by fixed values and competing interests, and integrativenegotiations, which seek synergies and value creation. Drawing insights from the merger of Intrakatand Gaia Anemos S.A., the research explores exchange ratios and share capital dynamics.Transitioning to the Disney-Fox merger, the pre-negotiation phase scrutinizes key players, third-party influencers, target selection, and due diligence. The negotiation process is dissected, focusingon how antitrust considerations and legal nuances influence it. In the post-negotiation phase, thestudy seeks the complexities of implementing the merger agreement after its execution and itsimpact on the market. Examining the exchange ratio and ownership percentages provides valuableinsights into the specific transaction’s negotiation dynamics and how they have potentiallyinfluenced the final agreement.Τεκμήριο Profit shifting worldwide: an empirical investigation(01/31/2019) Delis, Fotios; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Economides, George; Kalyvitis, SarantisThis paper aims to provide an estimation of international tax-motivated profit shifting within MNEs. Following Dharmapala and Riedel (2013), with some firm-specific differentiations that convert their approach from deterministic to stochastic, we estimate that a 10% increase in parent’s pre-tax and pre-shifting profit increases low-tax subsidiary’s observed pre-tax profit by approximately 0.45%. We introduce a global heat map, which confirms that the extent of profit shifting is larger in countries with lower tax rates during the period 2008-2017 and a line chart, which reveals that profit shifting’s trend on a global scale, during the same period, was declining maybe because of BEPS initiative that OECD established in 2012-2013.Τεκμήριο Savings in Greece with 2023 HBS data(14-03-2025) Παντίσκα, Λελούδα; Pantiska, Lelouda; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Economics; Dioikitopoulos, Evangelos; Kammas, Pantelis; Kalyvitis, SarantisΟ γενικός σκοπός αυτής της διατριβής είναι η αξιολόγηση των τάσεων αποταμίευσης για την ελληνική οικονομία με βάση τα στοιχεία σε επίπεδο νοικοκυριών για το έτος 2023, λειτουργώντας ως ενημέρωση για προηγούμενη μελέτη.
