Τεκμήριο The role, cooperation, and policies of the European Union inside the United Nations: past, present and future(28-03-2024) Bakas, Dimitrios; Μπάκας, Δημήτριος; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of International and European Economic Studies; Roumanias, Konstantinos; Blavoukos, SpyrosWithin the post-World War II diplomatic and political environment, two critical intra-national projects were initiated almost in parallel: The creation of a new global platform, in the form of the United Nations, where nations and the establishment of a political and economic set of processes and formal institutions that would lead to the creation of the European Union, which is still on the course to further economic, fiscal, and political integration. This paper examines the interlock of these two international bodies through the evolution of the project for European integration towards a strong and productive engagement of the European Union inside the UN system. Both organizations have been the strongest global proponents of multilateralism, peace, security, and sustainable development but also continuous subjects of criticism for their setup, operation, evolution, effectiveness even to the point of justifying their mere existence in the international stage. However, a calm assessment of post-war international affairs can show that on one side the UN, by promoting multilateralism and working to address important humanitarian and social issues, has played a pivotal role to contain international conflicts and avert another global, open armed confrontation; equally so, Europe in the beginning of the 21st century is more united and integrated economically and politically than it has ever been and the post 2022 severe security challenges, are underlining the need to further forge European unity.Hence, the EU – UN partnership is more than a natural product the two bodies’ role and weight in international affairs; it is rather a necessity to the shaping of modern policies and affairs in a new multi-polar world.
