Mapping the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Athens University of Economics and Business: the case study of SDG 1: no poverty and SDG 2: zero hunger

Abstract

Για την επίτευξη της βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης, όλοι οι τομείς της κοινωνίας πρέπει να καταβάλουν πρωτοφανείς προσπάθειες για την επίτευξη των στόχων βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης (ΣΒΑ). Είναι πιθανό ότι τα πανεπιστήμια θα μπορέσουν να διαδραματίσουν εξέχοντα ρόλο στο να βοηθήσουν τις κοινότητες να αναπτύξουν πιο βιώσιμες μεθόδους διαβίωσης και εργασίας. Πολλά πανεπιστήμια και επιχειρήσεις χρησιμοποιούν τους Στόχους στο πλαίσιο των στρατηγικών και των εκθέσεών τους για τη βιωσιμότητα ως κλίμακα προόδου στη βιωσιμότητα. Ωστόσο, δεν υπάρχει τυποποιημένη μεθοδολογία για την αποτύπωση των 17 στόχων, των 169 στόχων και των 232 δεικτών. Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία αποτελεί μια προσπάθεια χαρτογράφησης των δραστηριοτήτων του Οικονομικού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών σχετικά με τους Στόχους Βιώσιμης Ανάπτυξης 1: Καμία φτώχεια και 2: Μηδενική πείνα, με βάση τον οδηγό "Getting started with the SDGs in universities: Α guide for universities, higher education institutions, and the academic sector”, που παρέχεται από το SDSN Αυστραλίας/Ειρηνικού. Ο οδηγός αυτός παρέχει το ερευνητικό πλαίσιο που βοηθά στον εντοπισμό και την κατηγοριοποίηση των δραστηριοτήτων των πανεπιστημίων γύρω από τη βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη και στη συνέχεια βοηθά τα πανεπιστήμια να υιοθετήσουν περισσότερες δράσεις προς τους ΣΒΑ. Τέλος, η διατριβή εξετάζει τέσσερις πυλώνες με ποιοτικά και ποσοτικά δεδομένα από το AUEB και καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι τα πανεπιστήμια έχουν κρίσιμο ρόλο στην ανάπτυξη της κοινότητας και ο ρόλος αυτός πρέπει να θέσει ως προτεραιότητα την ατζέντα της αειφορίας υιοθετώντας περισσότερες δράσεις γύρω από αυτήν.

In order to achieve sustainable development, all sectors in society need to put unprecedented efforts in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is likely that universities will be able to play a prominent role in helping communities develop more sustainable methods of living and working. Many universities and businesses are using the Goals within their sustainability strategies and reports as a scale of progress in sustainability. There is, however, no standard methodology for mapping the 17 goals, 169 targets and 232 indicators. This thesis is an attempt to map the Athens University of Economics and Business’ activities regarding the Sustainable Development Goal 1: No poverty and 2: Zero Hunger, based on the guide“Getting started with the SDGs in universities: A guide for universities, higher education institutions, and the academic sector”, provided from SDSN Australia/Pacific. This guide provides the research framework that helps identify and categorize the universities activities around sustainable development and subsequently is helping universities to adopt more actions towards the SDGs. Lastly, the thesis examines four pillars with qualitative and quantitative data from AUEB and it concludes that universities have a critical role to play in community development and this role has to prioritize the sustainability agenda by adopting more actions around it.
