Τεκμήριο Exploring relationship quality and its antecedents in the social media context: the application of the relational benefits and costs approach(21-04-2016) Tsimonis, Georgios; Τσιμόνης, Γεώργιος; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Marketing and Communication; Gounaris, Spiros; Indounas, Konstantinos; Dimitriadis, SergiosThe thesis studies the development of consumer-brand relationships within the environment of social media brand fan pages, and the effect of such relationships on the company/brand. For this purpose, the study adopts and uses the concept of Relationship Quality, by applying the Relational Benefits and Costs approach. In order to fulfil the objectives of the thesis, a three-step research approach was employed: First, in order to understand the motives and the way that companies use social media, 14 interviews with digital marketing managers of companies that have created fan pages on popular social networks were conducted. Then, a series of focus group discussions with consumers-users of brand fan pages in social media were conducted. The research approach was completed after a quantitative study on consumers-users of popular brand fan pages. An electronic questionnaire was uploaded on the Facebook and Twitter fan pages of four companies, resulting in a total of 1,792 fully completed questionnaires.Findings indicate, that consumers-users of brand fan pages, perceive seven benefits and three costs that have a significant positive and negative impact on the relationship quality with the fan page respectively. Furthermore, study’ results indicate that the relationship quality with fan page has a significant positive effect on the relationship quality with the company/brand. Additionally, the findings support the positive effect of relationship quality (with the fan page & with the company/brand) on behavioural outcomes such as word of mouth, purchase intention, and fan page revisit intention. Finally, the study has confirmed the moderating role of four variables, in the relationship between benefits-costs and fan page relationship quality. This thesis contributes to the marketing literature, by providing an integrated approach on the development of consumer-brand relationships in social media, while it provides marketing managers with useful insights regarding the effective management of brand fan pages.
